Semi Conscious?

13 08 2010

Are semis truly dead?  Or are they barely breathing?

Yesterday’s article shed a lot of light on the market for semi-detached houses, or more accurately - the market for developers to construct them in the first place.

Here are my thoughts shown through my own experiences in the industry…

“Semi Dead”

12 08 2010

I’ve long surmised that the days of developers and speculators building semi-detached houses are long over.

Barring a handful of reasons such as zoning and of course, the money in their pockets, there doesn’t seem to be any reason to construct these dwellings, joined at the hip.

Below is a great article by Terrence Belford from the Globe & Mail that examines the dying breed…

“Sex Sells. No, Wait, Maybe It Doesn’t…”

23 07 2010

For years, developers have used sex and lifestyle images to sell real estate, but some industry insiders say it doesn’t work and are calling for a more genuine approach.

This article first appeared in last Friday’s Globe & Mail

Sherbourne Commons

13 07 2010

Just a few city blocks north of where I call “home,” a massive waterfront revitalization project is underway.

The ribbon-cutting took place a long time ago, and the bulldozers have moved in!

I’m incredibly optimistic, especially when I look at the artist’s renderings and read about all the incredible facilities that will be built, but for some unknown reason, I can’t seem to shape my overwhelming sense of skepticism…

“Anything’s Better Than What Stands There Now”

9 07 2010

As much as I love to write, sometimes, I just can’t say it as well as somebody better.

Bruce Bell is one of Toronto’s foremost historians, and in the July issue of our local St. Lawrence Market newspaper, “The Bulletin,” Mr. Bell writes about the history of the North Market on Front Street, and surmises that “anything is better than what stands there now.”

As much as I dislike the “winning” design of the new North Market, I have to agree with Mr. Bell that the current structure has got to go…

8 07 2010

What defines a “boutique” condo?

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?  Is this a selling point, and does it add value?

Some boutiques are special, and others are just full of discount crap like this:

Tomas Kaberle for Devin Setoguchi?  Straight up?  That’s a dream!

Wayne Gretzky is coming out of retirement to play for the Leafs?  That’s great news!

Oh, yeah - and there’s also these two massive condominiums that just opened outside of the Air Canada Centre, brought to you by the good folks at MLSE…

Four months into the occupancy phase, and this condo is far from complete.

If you’ve never seen what the common elements of a condo looks like during “occupancy,” perhaps this video will enlighten you…

43 And Counting…

22 06 2010

Casa Condominium is a beautiful and breathtaking building.

It’s in a great area, it has great amenities, the layouts are fantastic, and the finishes are all upgraded.

Investors are likely going to make money, BUT, they have to sell their units first…

Square Feet?

17 06 2010

My bathtub measures 6 x 3 and is 18 square feet.

My laundry room measures 8 x 4 and is 32 square feet.

The smallest condo available for purchase at the glorious new D.N.A. Lofts Phase Three is 270 square feet.

Yes.  270 square feet…
